So we took on the distributionship for Pet Cubes sometime ago. When we shared Pet Cubes with our customers, they all have this very puzzled look on their faces. So we decided to do up a blog post with pictures, (because a picture speaks a thousand words), just so that everybody can have a better idea on what it is, what it looks like etc.
WHAT IS PET CUBES?
Pet Cubes are dog meals prepared from fresh, human-grade ingredients (ie: stuff that you and I humans can eat). Nothing like freezed-dried, air-dried, powder-dried, baked-dried etc. It’s more like Home-Cooked-Food kind. There are 4 ranges in Pet Cubes: Essentials,
Junior, Complete and Raw. The meals are prepared in Singapore, in a commercial kitchen that is AVA-licensed, and the kitchen also follows HACCP protocols to ensure that the preparation, cooking and cleanliness is up to par (because our furkids deserve the best). Let’s dig a little bit more:
Raw is like bloody kind of raw. To prevent bacteria from multiplying, all RAW meals are prepared in freezing conditions. The portioned meals are then blast frozen, sealed and stored for 7 days at -30°Celsius to kill any remaining parasites. All RAW meals are grain-free and consist of raw meat, raw organs and gently cooked vegetables.
Essentials consist of a mixture of meat, organs and vegetables to form a balanced meal for your pooch. These are cooked lightly at 70-80° Celsius to kill bacteria. Food is then portioned, blast frozen and sealed for freshness. If your dog is allergic to grains, this is a good grain-free option to choose from.
Complete is a power packed meal with a mixture of meat, organs, vegetables and supplements like Bee Pollen, Berry Anti-oxidant powder, Glucosamin and Chondroitin powder, Spirulina powder etc. This is ideal if you have a growing puppy, an active adult dog, pregnant bitches, or a sick dog in need of extra boosts. If your dog is allergic to grains, this is a good grain-free option to choose from too.
Although this range is termed JUNIOR, it can be consumed by dogs of all ages. JUNIOR meals are packed with extra carbohydrates to provide additional energy for growing pups or active adults. Brown Rice or Pasta is added into the mix, on top of important booster supplements like Deep Sea Salmon Oil, Super Berry Powder, Probiotics and Prebiotics powder etc to ensure that our furkids are as strong as Superman. The JUNIOR Range has been discontinued since October 2015.
Do check out the ingredients list to see the specific ingredients for each protein type.
Each Pet Cubes pack is about 320g and conveniently divided into 4 portions of about 80g for you. Here’s what it looks like:
Each pack is stamped with the Pet Cube range and protein type, plus the expiry date. There is also a pack of oxygen absorber in each pack to keep the meals fresher.
The meat, organs and vegetables are minced finely and mixed thoroughly so that for fussy furkids, they do not just lick the meat off and go back to sleep. The finely minced texture also prevents dogs from choking on their food when they wolfed it down, as well as easy to chew on for puppies and senior dogs. The greenish blobs you see on top of each cube, are the power supplements that are added just before blast freezing the meals (in this case, its a mixture of Spirulina, Alfafa, Sea Coral Calcium). Depending on the range and protein you choose, the contents of the pack will look different because of the ingredients and also different coloured blobs too (ie: Super Berry powder will cause purple looking blobs).
HOW MUCH TO FEED
Weigh your dog and feed 2-3% of the body weight. Let’s do 2 simple examples.
Example 1: Toy Breeds
Weight of dog = 4kg
AT 2-3%, is 80g-120g/day of Pet Cubes. Remember, each pack of Pet Cubes is 320g and each cube is 80g.
So, if you feed your dog one meal a day, you will feed 1 cube to your dog plus some treats and that should give them a full tummy.
Example 2: Mongrels, Medium Breeds
Weight of dog = 20kg
AT 2-3%, is 400g-600g/day of Pet Cubes. Each pack of Pet Cubes is 320g and each cube is 80g.
If you feed twice a day, you will feed 2.5-3.5 cubes to your dog PER meal.
If you tend to feed your dog treats, do remember to reduce the number of cubes so that your dog does not get too much calories in a day and get obese.
HOW TO FEED
Pet Cubes are to be stored in your freezer compartment. The night before, just put a pack into the fridge for it to thaw overnight. Next day meal time, just remove the seal and serve. If your dog has a sensitive stomach to cold food, you may warm the food up by putting the food in a bowl and placing this bowl in a bigger bowl that has some hot water in it. DO NOT, I stress, DO NOT mircowave, DO NOT pan-fry, DO NOT steam the food as doing so will destroy the nutrients of the food, especially the blobs of supplements on top of each cube.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Do remember to do the 7 day food transition when changing your dog’s diet to Pet Cubes. Diarrhoea or runny stools in the beginning is common as your dog’s stomach adjust to the new, nutrient rich food. You can feed your dog some yoghurt, kefir or prebiotics and probiotics supplements to help re-establish the gut flora to better digest Pet Cubes.
Fussy dogs may also go on hunger strikes as Pet Cubes are very different from dog kibbles that have been heavily coated with flavourings (think wholemeal sandwich vs potato chips). You can encourage them to eat by adding some of their favourite meat into the mix (eg: additional shredded chicken breast, yumeez)
Generally after transitioning to Pet Cubes, you would notice that the your dog is pooping less poop (as compared to on a kibble diet) due to the high digestibility of Pet Cubes and increased nutrient absorption. The poop is also soft but holds itself together, and less odour as well.
It is our belief, as well as from the extensive research done by wholistic vets and pet nutritionists, that meals made from freshly prepared ingredients are the best meals for Man’s best friend. Many people are unable to provide home-cooked food for their dogs due to their long working hours, the lack of know-how, the queasiness to handle raw meat and organs, too troublesome to shop, prep and cook etc. The high quality of ingredients, a balanced diet of meat, organs and vegetables, as well as the convenience of serving allow Pet Cubes to help you pawrents provide yummylicious nutritional meals to their furkids.
