Coprophagia ~ The Eating of Faeces aka a Poop Eating Problem
Why do some pups and dogs eat poop? This is not an uncommon question in dog forums and groups posed by new dog owners. More often than not, the reason could be an underlying medical issue. Some of the habits could be due to lack of nutrition. Malnourished dogs especially those observed in puppy mills may eat faeces as they simply do not have enough food, or it could be a mother’s instinct to keep their nesting area clean.
Nutrition wise, if diagnosed by the vet, it could be that the dog does not have a good digestive system. When food is not digested / fermented properly, the dog has an instinct to recycle the poop again so that the nutrients can be re-absorbed by the body. A lack of Vitamin B is also a cause of this bad habit. Dogs feel the urge to eat poop as they may be seeking these minerals lacking in their regular food. As such, food nutrition needs to be addressed.
However, a simpler reason could be your puppy is just bored or curious to “taste” an unfamiliar object. Most pups put stuff into their mouths! Therefore simply clean up as soon as they defecate to prevent a reoccurrence. If your pup / dog persists and in unable to break away from this habit, do consult your vet.
